Professionally Hosed: Watch Aero Performance Build Hoses for Experimental and Certified Aircraft
Vital aircraft fluid hoses, like our own cardiovascular systems, are one area that can bring us to a halt in a hurry. They're easy to overlook and under-spec. KITPLANES columnist Myron Nelson recently paid a visit to Aero Performance, a subsidiary of Aircraft Spruce, to see how hoses are made. Not just any hoses, either, these were replacements for his still-good (but getting old) hoses on his Van's RV-10. What stands out? Measure carefully, use the right tools and test what you've built.

On a recent visit to CubCrafters to help build a Carbon Cub UL, our editor in chief got a first-hand look at the company's latest bit of manufacturing tech: a semi-automated Haas six-axis milling machine. The coolest part? The robotic arm that manages raw billet blocks going in and, almost tenderly, extracts the finished piece from the mill when it's done some 40 minutes later.

    A game changer for me was switching rubber hoses out for lifetime teflon hoses. You can order them to exact lengths needed. People do not realize that any rubber hoses need to be replaced each time every 5 years or sooner. And you cannot see the rubber on fuel hoses when they are covered by steel braid and fire block orange insulator. But when you take the hoses apart, and try and bend them, they are as hard as a ...... (you fill in the blanks with your favorite saying from your mechanic). Go complete Teflon hoses in your engine compartment.

    I can't understand why kitfox doesn't offer a version that keeps the frame but is covered with riveted aluminum sheets. Why not? The single biggest complaint I've heard about the kitfox build process (other than parts not fitting correctly - which is ridiculous) is not only how messy the ironing, priming and painting process is but the aprox. 6 months or more time it adds to total build time. And that doesn't include having to deal with fumes and clean up. For this reason alone, I would opt for a Zenith if it weren't that their high wing aircraft are so damned ugly and weird looking.

  • @dave_ecclectic

    Just two notes. That is a combination square not a carpenters square. If you used the other side, it will give 45* angles 2: if you used a horizontal bandsaw then cutting 45* is easy, as well as cutting square ends. Using that bandsaw eliminates 95% of what you are instructing. You are using the wrong tool and making a lot of measurement problems to deal with it. 3: BUT...Your band saw can be used with a miter gauge and again eliminate the problematic measuring you are doing. Mark the cut point and run the stock through at a 45* angle. Just like you are doing at 8:33 except using that thing you're using at 5:43 That is not a square it is a miter gauge.

    ... it would be worth mentioning first ... that we are exercising such stall actions, because they are used for the purposes of landing, as their main purpose. Aside from (while still in the air) checking the aircraft if it could perform a safe landing stall, once we get to the ground, and transition phase :).

    If I have seen this correctly, the same dimple dy set was used for the upper and lower plates. When I do this, the angles do not match. When dimpling, there is an angle of 110° on the lower side of the upper plate. So you would have to use a dimple tool for the lower sheet that has an angle of 110° degrees on the upper side of the lower sheet. And it was not mentioned that if I have a thicker lower sheet that I want to countersink, the angle of the countersink should be 110°. Here is a link where this is explained in detail.ruclips.net/video/WC5BAp2xvDc/видео.html. But perhaps it does not play a decisive role in aluminium and small rivets.Perhaps the dimpletool also has the same angle at the top and bottom of the male and female parts.

    Bottom line is Vans is going to keep the millions they made from the company they built. New and existing customers must pay more for a product. Typical bankruptcy out come. Van's will be able to suck more money out of the company and creditors will lose. Unfortunate outcome in the aviation community.

  • @amtpdb1
    @amtpdb1 Месяц назад

    Van's prices are going up, they are not going to pay their creditors all their money owed and are asking people who have already paid their money for more money. Vans tells everyone that they were not charging enough. They made mistakes about the lazer cut parts and farming out manufacturing of parts to make more money and the greed got the best of them. Vans loaned their company several million dollars. Could someone tell me where they got this money from? Maybe the tooth fairy. Could someone tell me if Vans is going to take 10 cents on the dollar for the money they loaned the company or are they going to get ALL of it back. The prices they charged were high enough before all of this or they would not have millions to loan themself!!!! People now have no morals. Maybe Vans will give back all the excess profits they have made and everyone can that worked with them can get paid or not charged more for what they contracted for. Too many people are saying now, I got mine so I don't care if anyone else gets theirs.
